A New Home
for
Shirley Parker
and Family

Shirley Parker and her 2 children Danielle 18, a student at Delgado Community College , and Daniel, a lively 3 1/2 year old have been on the East St Tammany Habitat for Humanity waiting list since October 2005.  Hurricane Katrina damaged her trailer beyond repair and she evacuated to Mississippi for a month following the storm.  When she returned Shirley lived with her mother for almost a year.  FEMA delivered her travel trailer in 2006 and she remains there today.

It has been over 2 years since Shirley saw a sign advertising Habitat homes and called our office.  When Habitat approved her application in 2005 Shirley volunteered on several Habitat homes and earned all of her 200 sweat equity hours.   She is so excited and said, “I never thought the day would come that my home would finally be started”.  On February 6, 2008 volunteers will be at 30160 Susan St in Lacombe and her home and it will begin with a wall raising ceremony.   Even though she has completed her sweat equity hours she is looking forward to meeting and working with the volunteers from Thrivent and the local Lutheran churches.  “I think it is so good that they can volunteer their time and build my home” Shirley said when we talked about the help she will be receiving through Thrivent and the Lutheran volunteers.

Shirley’s children are really looking forward to having their own rooms especially her daughter Danielle who needs to have a quiet place to study.  “I will have much better behaved children, Shirley said, “when they have their own rooms.”   A decent affordable home for the Parker family will change their lives.

Shirley’s home is one of 322 homes that will be built across the United States in 2008 through Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity and the only home to be build in the greater New Orleans area.  To volunteer your time to help build Shirley’s home call 985-639-0656 or visit www.esthfh.org.  For more information on Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, visit www.thriventbuilds.com.
